The Unwrapped Series

The Unwrapped Series is for recognising those places or things that offer uncategorised greatness. It’s not a review site and we certainly won’t be offering star ratings. The premise is simple: the places or things on this site are things that I love. Therefore, if you’re like me, you might just like them to. The Unwrapped Series will focus on things that I love (naturally!) including beautiful places to stay and mouthwatering places to eat. They idea is to help uncover some hidden gems, especially those independents and boutiques off the high street, but it doesn’t fall neatly into those categorises. Like I say, we are here for uncategorised greatness. The places that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. The places that stand out from the crowd but not necessarily by wearing the loudest clothes (they might, of course). Aside from places to sate your hunger or lay your head, I’ll also be sharing other things from life that I feel deserve the attention. It could be an experience, a product or anything else. It’s uncategorised, remember.

Fundamentally, this site stems from the wonderful American writer Annie Dillard, who recalled in her essay ‘Seeing’ how as a child she

used to take a precious penny of my own and hide it for someone else to find.” It was her way of creating wonder, both for herself and for the “first lucky passer-by who would receive in this way, regardless of merit, a free gift from the universe”.

I fell in love with this story on first reading and it connected with something that I’ve been trying to do for some time with my own writing, on travel, food and experiences around the world: give some tips, share some joy. My own small gift for others to pick up if they find it.

It’s what we are trying to create here at the Unwrapped Series. Not comprehensive travel guides or in-depth analysis of food and restaurant culture, or a barrage of ratings after ratings, but just my own uncategorised string of pennies, collected from places and things that I love and that I hope others might too. Whether it’s food, travel tips, hotel stays, experiences or cultural wonders, I’ll be sharing these little gifts in the hope that you might one day unwrap them yourselves.

Let’s enjoy the adventure together.
