A Marisqueira do Lis, Lisbon

What a find this was!

We were actually heading to Ramiro, as it was recommended by a friend- for a clear reason too as there was a huge queue to be seated. Feeling too hungry for the wait we decided to skip their long queues and we carried down Av. Almirante, stumbling across this absolute gem about 10 minutes walk away. I guess fate leads you to these places. Directly translated as ‘seafood restaurant’, this traditional Portuguese eatery is apparently highly recommended by locals so we had to sample the hype.

Walking in you’re surrounded by bags of various fresh shellfish, molluscs and seafood; people nattering at the bar drinking their beers; and white linen tablecloths simply decorated to match the overall unfussy style of the restaurant. Large fish tanks are dotted around showcasing their choice of fresh fish and of course the football playing, central to the walls, illustrating the Portuguese love of the sport.

A busy and chaotic atmosphere that is wonderfully thriving, from customers nipping in for a quick bite to large and loud group tables, taking their time with each dish.

If you’re looking for delicate and attentive table service, this may not be your place- with more of a freestyle approach to dining, waiters are certainly quick and efficient; rushing from table to table with no notepad, just their memory of each table’s orders. I would absolutely suggest going with the flow here, go by their daily recommendations and if you’re a non- Portuguese speaker, use your google translate for the menu! Clear to see that these guys have been here a while and know the tricks of the trade.

Informal serving platters are brought to you as and when they are ready, showing off serious five-star quality, super fresh and full of flavours- just expect lots of garlic and oil with your seafood dishes. Plates are plentiful,  generous for sharing and for you to sample all their ch0ices. A super varied menu, from simple dishes like octopus salad, clams and garlic prawns, to their local delicacy of goose barnacles (those were definitely not for me!).

Great value for money, laid-back and speedy it’s the perfect place for a mid-week treat whilst enjoying the buzz of beautiful Lisbon. A memorable experience, one which we will be bringing our friends and family too during their visits!
